Aleš Erjavec
Aleš Erjavec (30 September 1951, Ljubljana) is a scientific advisor at the Institute of Philosophy of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences in Ljubljana, a retired professor of aesthetics at the University of Ljubljana and a professor at Shanghai Normal University. He is the author or editor of 15 books, including Ideologija in umetnost modernizma (Ljubljana 1988, Sarajevo 1991), K podobi (Ljubljana 1995, Changchun 2002), Postmodernism and the Postsocialist Condition (ed.; Berkeley 2003, Taipei 2008), Ljubezen na zadnji pogled (Ljubljana 2006, Belgrade 2013), and Aesthetic Revolutions and Twentieth-Century Avant-Garde Movements (ed.; Durham 2015, Belgrade 2016, Beijing 2018).
Erjavec was one of the founders of the Slovenian Society for Aesthetics in 1983 and its first president, and between 1998 and 2001 he was also the president of the International Association for Aesthetics. His main areas of research are critical aesthetics, contemporary art history, critical theory, and philosophy and theory of visual culture. His original contributions to the humanities and social sciences include the conceptualisation of the common traits of post-socialist art, the theory of the third avant-garde art (typical of post-socialist countries) and the concept of aesthetic revolutions.
