American artist and critic Martha Rosler (Born July 29, 1943) is best known for her videos and photography, photo-text, installation, and performance, as well as writing about art and culture. Rosler's son is the graphic novelist Josh Neufeld. They have collaborated on a number of projects.

Life and work

She has also lived and taught in Canada. She graduated from Brooklyn College (1965) and the University of California, San Diego (1974). Rosler has also been an original and influential cultural critic and theorist for over twenty-five years. The writings collected here address such key topics as documentary photography, feminist art, video, government patronage of the arts, censorship, and the future of digitally based photographic media. Mixing analysis and wit, Rosler challenges many of the fundamental precepts of contemporary art practice. Her influential essay In, around, and afterthoughts: on documentary photography almost single-handedly dismantled the myth of liberal documentary photography when it appeared. Many of the essays of Decoys and Disruptions volume have had a similarly wide-ranging influence. Martha Rosler's essays have been published widely in catalogues, magazines, such as Artforum, Afterimage, Quaderns and Grey Room.
