Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831) was a German philosopher, and a major figure in German Idealism. His historicist and idealist account of reality revolutionized European philosophy and was an important precursor to Continental philosophy and Marxism.

Selected passages on aesthetics[edit]

On Kant's aesthetics.

(Die Kantische Philosophie), section in "Einleitung: Historische Deduktion des wahren Begriffs der Kunst", in Vorlesungen über die Aestethik, Bd. 1, in Werke. Vollständige Ausgabe, Bd. 10, ed. D.H.G. Hotho, Berlin: Duncker und Humblot, 1835, pp 74-80.
"Die Kantische Philosophie", section in "Einleitung: Historische Deduktion des wahren Begriffs der Kunst", in Vorlesungen über die Ästhetik, I (Ä I), in Werke, Bd. 13, eds. Eva Moldenhauer and Karl Markus Michel, Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp, 1970, pp 83-89.
"Kant's Philosophy", section in "Introduction: Historical Deduction of the True Concept of Art", in Aesthetics: Lectures on Fine Art, Vol. 1, trans. T.M. Knox, Oxford, 1975, pp 56-61. (English)

An introduction to the general forms of art (symbolic; classical; and romantic) and the individual arts in which they attain their "most appropriate actuality and greatest application" (architecture; sculpture; and painting, music, and poetry, respectively).

"Eintheilung", section in "Einleitung", in Vorlesungen über die Aestethik, Bd. 1, in Werke. Vollständige Ausgabe, Bd. 10, ed. D.H.G. Hotho, Berlin: Duncker und Humblot, 1835, pp 91-116.
"Einteilung", section in "Einleitung", in Vorlesungen über die Ästhetik, I (Ä I), in Werke, Bd. 13, eds. Eva Moldenhauer and Karl Markus Michel, Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp, 1970, pp 100-124.
"Division of the Subject", section in "Introduction", in Aesthetics: Lectures on Fine Art, Vol. 1, trans. T.M. Knox, Oxford, 1975, pp 69-90. (English)

Another introduction to the differentiation of the individual arts, where the modes of apprehension (sight, hearing, and ideas) provide for art the division into visual arts, art of sound, and poetry, respectively.

"Das System der einzelnen Künste: Eintheilung", in Vorlesungen über die Aestethik, Bd. 2, in Werke. Vollständige Ausgabe, Bd. 11, ed. D.H.G. Hotho, Berlin: Duncker und Humblot, 1837, pp 252-263.
"Das System der einzelnen Künste: Einteilung", in Vorlesungen über die Ästhetik, II (Ä II), in Werke, Bd. 14, eds. Eva Moldenhauer and Karl Markus Michel, Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp, 1970, pp 254-265.
"The System of the Individual Arts: Division of the Subject", in Aesthetics: Lectures on Fine Art, Vol. 2, trans. T.M. Knox, Oxford, 1975, pp 621-629. (English)

"[P]oetry cuts itself free from the importance of the material, in the general sense that the specific character of its mode of sensuous expression affords no reason for restriction to a specific subject-matter and a confined sphere of treatment and presentation. It is therefore not linked exclusively to any specific form of art; on the contrary, it is the universal art which can shape in any way and express any subject-matter capable at all of entering the imagination, because its proper material is the imagination itself, that universal foundation of all the particular art-forms and the individual arts. [..] [I]t must always [..] emphasize, as the really chief thing concerned, the spiritual idea, the imagination which speaks to inner imagination." (Knox 1975:966-967,969)

Die Poesie: Einleitung", in Vorlesungen über die Aestethik, Bd. 3, in Werke. Vollständige Ausgabe, Bd. 12, ed. D.H.G. Hotho, Berlin: Duncker und Humblot, 1838, pp 220-235.
"Die Poesie", introductory section, in Vorlesungen über die Ästhetik, III (Ä III), in Werke, Bd. 15, eds. Eva Moldenhauer and Karl Markus Michel, Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp, 1970, pp 222-237.
"Poetry: Introduction", in Aesthetics: Lectures on Fine Art, Vol. 2, trans. T.M. Knox, Oxford, 1975, pp 959-970. (English)

Edited from Hegel's manuscript notes for his lectures and transcripts of his lectures in 1823, 1826, and 1828-9. Hotho kept as close as possible to Hegel, he says, but his aim was to produce a continuous text, and this means that we cannot be sure in detail whether some of the phraseology is his (rather than Hegel's), or whether inconsistencies are due to Hegel's changes of mind after 1823. • Die Idee und das Ideal, ed. Georg Lasson, Leipzig, 1931. First volume of what was meant to be a completely new edition, cut short by the death of the editor. Contains the Introduction and Part I. Lasson's desire was to preserve every possible word of Hegel's ; he was dissatisfied with what he regarded as Hotho's modifications of Hegel's ipsissima verba. His book is based primarily on a reproduction of the 1826 lectures, supplemented occasionally by those of 1823, and frequently by extracts from Hotho's printed edition. (Knox 1975:vi)
