Philosopher and doctor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, he was Director of Research at the Collège International de Philosophie, professor and director of the Knowledge, Organisations, and Technical Systems research unit at UTC (Université de Compiègne), and Assistant Director General of the Institut National de l'Audiovisuel.

He is the author of La Technique et le Temps. He led several research programmes in the domain of digital technologies applied to text, image, and sound, and he conceived and organised the Mémoires du Futur exhibition, presented at the Centre Pompidou in 1987.

2002-2005 director of IRCAM.

Lives in Paris.
