Born 1971 in Bratislava. In 1992 she graduated Cultural Studies at the Comenius University in Bratislava and joined the Soros Center for Contemporary Art as programme coordinator. As the director, she left SCCA in 1999. In 2002 she co-curated Manifesta 3 in Ljubljana. Hlavajová is faculty member of the Center for Cultural Studies at Bard College in New York and writes for art magazines such as Ateliér (CZ), Profil (SK) and Kalligram (SK/HU). As director of the BAK (Basis voor actuele Kunst) in Utrecht she now commutes between Bratislava, Amsterdam and Utrecht. Together with Kathrin Rohmberg Mária Hlavajová has been a director of the project Tranzit since September 2002.
