'''Martha Rosler''' (1943) is an American artist. She works in video, photo-text, installation, and performance, as well as writing about art and culture. Rosler’s work is centered on everyday life and the public sphere, often with an eye to women's experience. Recurrent concerns are the media and war, as well as architecture and the built environment, from housing and homelessness to systems of transport.

She has also lived and taught in Canada. She graduated from Brooklyn College (1965) and the University of California, San Diego (1974). Rosler has also been an original and influential cultural critic and theorist for over twenty-five years. The writings collected here address such key topics as documentary photography, feminist art, video, government patronage of the arts, censorship, and the future of digitally based photographic media. Mixing analysis and wit, Rosler challenges many of the fundamental precepts of contemporary art practice. Her influential essay ''In, around, and afterthoughts: on documentary photography'' (1981) almost single-handedly dismantled the myth of liberal documentary photography when it appeared. Many of the essays of ''Decoys and Disruptions'' volume have had a similarly wide-ranging influence. Martha Rosler's essays have been published widely in catalogues, magazines, such as ''Artforum'', ''Afterimage'', ''Quaderns'', ''e-flux journal'', ''Texte zur Kunst'' and ''Grey Room''.
