Antonia Majaca
I am an art historian and theorist. My work incorporates political philosophy, critical media studies, political epistemology of technology and intellectual history. Currently, I hold the position of principal investigator for the multi-year research project ‘The Incomputable: Art in the Age of Algorithms' (2019-2021) at the IZK - Institute for Contemporary Art, Graz University of Technology, for which I have been granted funding by the Austrian National Science Fund (FWF). I am the editor of the forthcoming volume Incomputable Earth: Digital Technologies and the Anthropocene (Bloomsbury: Theory in the New Humanities, 2023.)
From 2018-2020 I was teaching critical theory at the DUTCH ART INSTITUTE, and acting as one of the thesis supervisors for DAI's 'How To Do Things With Theory' module.
From 2015-2016 I held the position of visiting professor at the Graz University of Technology, IZK - INSTITUTE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART.
I was one of the research curators in the long-term project 'Kanon Fragen' (initiated by Anselm Franke), at the HKW - HAUS DER KULTUREN DER WELT in Berlin. In 2017, at HKW, I co-curated a large-scale exhibition Parapolitics - Cultural Freedom and the Cold War and co-edited the comprehensive same-titled volume, published by Sternberg Press (2021).
In 2015 I founded ‘Feminist Takes' - a long term, itinerant investigation considering the relation between the Non-Western avant-garde cinema and feminist media theory, with sessions held so far in Kunsthalle Wien, Nottingham Contemporary, Tranzitdisplay Prague and GMK Zagreb. My book Feminist Takes: Early Works (co-edited with Jelena Vesic and Rachel O'Reilly) has been published by Sternberg Press (2021).
At DOCUMENTA 14, in collaboration with the theorist Angela Dimitrakaki and the artist Sanja Ivekovic, I authored a collective aural project 'Art of The Possible', and co-curated (with A. Dimitrakaki) the discursive program 'Women's Work in Revolt'.
Other discursive and educational programs I directed recently include BBX Crit Sessions for the BERLIN BIENNIAL X (in collaboration with Gabi Ngcobo and Sohrab Mohebbi), 'Memorial For(u)ms – Histories of Possibility' commissioned by the German DAAD and HAU - Hebel am Ufer Theater, Berlin and ’Knowledge Forms and Forming Knowledge - Limits and Horizons of Transdisciplinary Art-Based Research' at the Halle für Kunst & Medien in Graz.
From 2005-2011 I was the artistic director of G-MK - Galerija Miroslav Kraljevic, a non-profit contemporary art space in Zagreb. In parallel, my independent curatorial work, largely developed in close collaboration with art historian, theorist and curator Ivana Bago, engaged in discursive, exhibition and publishing projects at the intersection of art and media history, political and cultural theory and the sphere of contemporary art production.
As Delve - Institute for Duration, Location and Variables (est. 2009), Ivana and I jointly developed several long-term research and exhibition projects, including 'Exposures' – centered on the anti-essentialist forms of community and the Yugoslav political project, and Removed from the Crowd - exploring artistic and political practices of historical conceptualism of the 1960s and 1970s in Socialist Europe and the Global South.
Since 2018, I am on the editorial committee of the South as a State of Mind journal. I often contribute to art and theory publications and journals including Documenta 14, e-flux Journal, Nervous Systems (HKW), Documentary Across Disciplines (ed. by Hila Peleg and Erika Balsom), Was ist Kunst?, among others.
I have presented my work and given talks at institutions such as MUAC (Mexico City), MoMA (NYC), E-flux (NYC), Apexart (NYC), School of Visual Art (NYC), Goldsmiths (London), Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam), Nottingham Contemporary (Nottingham), Tabakalera (San Sebastian), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (Berlin), HKW - Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), HAU- Hebel am Ufer (Berlin), Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art (Berlin), Saas-Fee Summer Institute of Art (Berlin), KIT Trondheim Academy of Fine Art, (Trondheim), Ashkal Alwan (Beirut), Vienna University of Applied Arts (Vienna), Institute for Contemporary Art (Miami), Kunsthalle Wien, among others.
I studied Art History, Comparative Literature and Political Theory in Zagreb, New York and London and have been awarded scholarships and research grants for postgraduate studies from Goldsmiths College London and New York University. For my independent research and education, I have been granted funds from Getty Foundation, Fundacion Cisneros and FFAI foundation, among others. (Source)
