Amy Suo Wu, 2018

Amy Suo Wu is working between art, design and research. She was born in China, raised in the suburbs of Sydney and currently resides in Rotterdam. She graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy (Rotterdam) with a BFA in Graphic Design and from the Piet Zwart Institute (Rotterdam) with an MA in Media Design.

Although not loyal to any particular media, technique or subject, the commonalities throughout her work are critical, investigative and playful approaches that often challenge dominant discourses and hegemonic paradigms. Her recent research project Tactics/Poetics of Invisibility explores analogue forms of steganography, namely invisible ink; while Holycrapparel deals with re-used material, DIY practices, and the makeshift. Her body of work on steganographic practices as acts of protection, survival, and resistance in the face of oppression and violence has been published under the title A Cookbook of Invisible Writing (2019) through Onomatopee. From 2014-2019 she co-organized Rotterdam zine festival, Zine Camp.

Since 2013 she has been working at the Willem de Kooning Academy teaching Design Research, Concept and Image in the Graphic Design department and the Hacking minor to students across all disciplines. In the same year, she co-founded Eyesberg, a (graphic) design studio motivated by conceptual and experimental approaches working on many projects with WORM and WORM Parallel University. She has also worked for Rotterdam-based knowledge center, Creating 010, as text editor in the publishing research project, From Print to Ebooks: A Hybrid Publishing Toolkit for the Arts initiated by Institute of Networked Cultures and Creating 010.

Past art and design exhibitions and performances include Art Rotterdam, De Wereld Van Het Witte de With kwartier, Venice Biennale, Amsterdam Zine Jam, Sign Groningen, Showroom MAMA Rotterdam, WORM Rotterdam, V2_ Rotterdam, Roodkapje Rotterdam, Gogbot Enschede and ISEA Istanbul.
